WALLEYE AND THE MOON

Natural elements, such as the moon for example, can influence the life of walleye, their movements and feeding habits…

During the first and last quarter, we noticed that walleye are active all day long, but because of their continual movements, it is difficult to locate them.

We don't mean the type of the moon's influence which causes tides, but more its luminosity. It has been proven that the brighter the night is, the more frequently do walleye feed. We have come across a large number of small fish in the stomach of a walleye caught in the early morning, during a full moon on numerous occasions. The cycles of their digestion has undoubtedly proven to us that the fish had been consumed a few hours earlier, therefore, during the night.

Another example: in North America, Ontario, Canada, we were were in the company of the local anglers which exclusively catch walleye at night. Walleye's nocturnal feeding habits decrease its daily means. In other words, the more it feeds at night, the less active it is in the daytime. This is why it is difficult to fish for walleye in certain seasons of the year. A few days before and after the full moon, our best catches have been around dawn. In most cases the walleye's stomach is empty then.
On the contrary, during the full moon and especially in bright weather, walleye do not bite early in the morning, but around noon, which perfetcly matches the natural digestive cycle of fish which feed at night.
